Edutopia – Deborah Peart

As young math students begin the quest to answer the question “Who am I?” it’s critical for teachers to help them write a narrative that includes a strong belief that they were born to do math. Many students struggle in math classes because at some point along their mathematical journey they bought into the idea that they’re not “math people.” Children’s self-concept is the collection of attitudes and abilities that they believe define them. Within the development of identity, we have the opportunity to provide guidance and support for positive growth. (more)
