This is in contrast with structured afterschool activities like sports, art clubs, and other types of lessons. The American Academy of Pediatrics says that play helps children form strong bonds with their caretakers. Additionally, it contributes to “social-emotional, cognitive, language, and self-regulation skills that build executive function and a pro-social brain.”
