Outside the Box – Christy Johnson

Students at the Renascence School International were having fun on Friday as Mrs. Naomi Winter, a school parent, taught them how to fold and crease to create their own animal head origami masterpiece. Origami is the ancient art of paper folding practiced in Japan as early as the 17th century AD. The goal is to transform a flat piece of paper into a sculpture or work of art.  Research has shown that origami is not only fun but it provides a valuable way of developing vital cognitive and math skills. There are numerous benefits to learning origami.  George Levenson said, “For many students it engenders patience that leads to pride in one’s work, the ability to focus energy and increased self-esteem.” All of this and the kids only thought they were having fun!
