The study was conducted by researchers at the University of British Columbia and published in the journal PLoS One. It looked at the type of curriculum and expectations of kindergarten students, and how kindergarten could affect outcomes later in school. Researchers used a randomized controlled trial that analyzed the effectiveness of a set of curriculum called Tools of the Mind. The curriculum was adopted by teachers and given to 351 students with diverse backgrounds in 18 public schools in the Vancouver and Surrey school districts. The curriculum was developed in 1993 by Drs. Elena Bodrova and Deborah Leong, and emphasizes social dramatic play and hands-on learning. (more)
